BEADED HANDCOVER
WITH VERTICAL ACCENTS
Level: Intermediate/Advanced
Hook: #7
Thread: #20 DMC
Gauge: 7 sc per inch or 4 squares 2/beads
Other: #10 or large short hex beads (100)
For costume designs, you will want to use beads that are bright enough to
show up at a distance. More subtle combinations will work for regular jewelry.
This design uses a different way to incorporate beads in the mesh: The beads
are added during the dc stitches thusly: 1) Insert the hook into the work,
thread over hook and draw thru & upwards. With 2 loops now on the hook,
slide up ONE bead firmly against the hook, 2) wrap the thread over again,
slide up one more bead, draw thread through both loops & close.
Setup: measure 1/8" round elastic gold or silver and knot to size
of wrist. Gauge: In this pattern (dc, ch1) 10 times for the back of wrist,
and 20 times for the front of wrist.
Adjust as needed.
R1: start covering with SC. approx 1-1/2" before knot working R to
L around. When you reach the beginning connect with sl st. back = (20+
1 sc), front = (60 sc) for a total of 85 sc. Adjust as needed for different
sizes. The stitches should fit snugly on the elastic and leave room to
stretch.. If you change the size, you will need to recalculate the # of
squares
R2: For the back of wrist: (dc, skip 1,ch 2) 10 times for 10 rectangles
,
For the front rectangles: (dc w/2 beads, skip 1, ch 2) for 20 squares
ending by connecting to first dc.
NOTE: Beads will go to the back of the work. This will the front finished
side of the piece. All beaded rows must be worked on the same side. Bead
count: 20 sq +1 = 21x2 = 42 beads
WORK BI-DIRECTIONAL on the following rows:
R3: (sc, sk 1 st, ch 2) in ch 2 loop back around
R4: work front w/sc 18 squares (dc w/2 beads, ch 2) Bead count= (18+1)x2
= 38 beads
R5: (sc, sk 1 st, ch 2) in ch 2 loop back around
R6: 2 sc in 5 square loops and and start on the 8th to reduce to 7 squares.
Bead the inside 6 spokes = 12 beads
R7: (sc, sk 1 st, ch 2) in ch 2 loop back around
R8: 5 squares, bead the inside 4 spokes = 8 beads
R9: 4 squares plain mesh
R10: 4 squares plain mesh (no reduction)
(This is where you will sew a jewel later)
R11: Join dc in 4 stitches and chain 25-30 for finger loop.
Finish with scallop edging as desired to firm up edge, starting from back
and doing sc around finger loop.
